Competencies for Commissioning

The NHS is in transition from the world of Primary Care Trusts to Commissioning Consortia. The new world of Commissioning Consortia will require localities to understand the health needs of its population, to manage the quality and risk of all services (primary, community and secondary), and to commission services and pathways of care for quality and value for money.

Any such transition requires:

  • Clinical and managerial skills among the consortium leaders and local clinicians to offer a wider and higher quality range of services in primary care
  • Leadership skills in every team within the locality
  • Information and feedback on changes to service provision and pathways of care
  • Communication and engagement of all individuals
  • In order to meet this challenging agenda all members of the Commissioning board will need to understand their new roles and be equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge.

CHEC can offer support to the Board through education, training and facilitation.
